The Red Cedar

Well, it looks like God is smiling down on us again, as He has sent us more rain. I can't say how happy this makes me!

Most of you know about our local river, the Red Cedar, and how many gravel beds there are to get hung up on when the river is low. This rain has helped maintain a suitable river level, just in time I might add, as our June 9th trip is a full day (15.3 miles!) of paddling.

Our family took a short trip this past Memorial Day, and the river did not disappoint!

Before we even launched the boats we were treated to the antics of 4 river otters playing & dunking each other. Then a short time later we watched a huge snapping turtle take a slide down a very steep bank into the water, ker-sploosh! Not sure if it meant to take that particular route, as I can imagine it walking along the upper bank, minding its own business, and then the dirt giving way.

We saw numerous ducks, geese, and the ever-present eagle. I've never paddled that river and not seen at least 2 eagles. One stopped escorting us downriver long enough to pose:

Our ten year old son paddled his first river trip that night, and he did great!

You'll notice our youngest seems to be boat hopping. It's hard to sit still when you're 2! She loves to help paddle (and splash!).

Hubby claims to like paddling the tandem better than his single, and it's a good thing 'cuz I think the kids are hooked!
