Holy smoke! Where does the time go?!
Quickly, I'm going to throw out some details for those interested in next weekend's quick trip down the Namekagon. I say "quick", but it will be a partial day of paddling, overnight camping, and then a partial day of paddling before take-out. There are some shuttling considerations to be made, so the sooner you RSVP with your intentions "to camp, or not to camp" the better!
After leaving the Chetek area @ 7 am and running shuttle, we'll put in at the County K landing, just down river from the Trego flowage, and paddle until we feel like stopping to make camp, approximately 14-16 river miles. I know this sounds like a lot of distance but the river is flowing, carrying us along too. Consider the average of about 3 - 3.5 MPH.
If you decide not to camp there are take outs at Whispering Pines Landing (river mile #9.5), or Howell Landing (river mile #14.5). You can plan to leave your vehicle either place.
We are likely to camp downriver from the Howell Landing, as there are 3 separate campsites to choose from, and we will take out at Namekagon Trail Landing. This will be a total of 26 miles traveled in 2 days of paddling. It sounds like a swift current, with winding & steep shorelines will keep us entertained for sure.
If you plan to camp please bring your own tent, sleeping bag & mat, food & beverage, and extra clothing, and raingear. Please remember sunscreen & bug spray, as well as sunglasses or brimmed hat. Don't mean to sound bossy, but some of these things can make or break your comfort & safety on the water.
Also, please do a "dry run" of packing your gear into your boat at home. Let's not get to the put-in and spend time trying to figure out how to pack it all then.
I will be bringing my campstove and cookware, but if anyone else has some to bring it would speed up the cooking.
As that weekend draws near I'll be posting the weather conditions for the Hayward/Trego area so you can plan your clothing needs.
Please RSVP through email. Those of you on the mailing list will see an email today, Friday the 13th.
Any questions? Please email me soon!
